Private lessons of "Sketching & Watercolor: Journal Style"

I'm teaching private lessons of "Sketching & Watercolor: Journal Style." A one-on-one, 3-hour session takes place in Bernardo Winery (in North San Diego) and cost $75 per person.  Contact me to set up a date! (A $20 materials kit is available for purchase.)

In chronological order

Intro to Wet Felting Workshop

Saturday, January 9 9:30 to 12:30 in Escondido, California

$85 includes enough wool roving to create an ~18x18 square

Using colorful wool fibers, a modernized ancient technique, some creative designing and a lot of elbow grease, you will create a beautiful and feels-so-soft felt square in few hours. It may not be large enough to build a yurt; but it will make a lovely wall hanging or become part of another fiber piece. During the felting process there will be lots of time to visit and laugh with other participants and you won’t need to go to the gym to work out that day! All materials are provided for you including a selection of wool rovings and the equipment needed to create your own original 18x18” piece of hand-made felt. Wear clothes and shoes that may get wet. Email me to sign up.

July 22, Thursday
International Quilt Festival, Long Beach, California
I’m teaching two workshops

Quiltlets: Very small quilts for short attention spans

July 22: 9am-noon

Create a tiny, hand painted quilt of your own design using simple materials. Jane will gently guide you to draw your own design or trace a copyright free image onto cloth, then paint and hand stitch, using some fun basic embroidery stitches. Your creation could be used on it’s own as embellishment for a jacket or tote, or create more for a larger piece. As seen in Jane’s article in Oct/Nov 09 Quilting Arts magazine on Quiltlets.

Floral Rubber Stamps: Design & Carve your own

July 22: 2-5pm

A rubber stamp of your own design is a wonderful addition to an artist’s personal ‘tool box.’ Create a simple, graphic design to be used again and again on paper, cloth or any surface. Jane will guide you to select an flower image from a copyright free source, change it, simplify it and then, once it’s your own unique creation, carve the design into a small printmaking block. You’ll use this skill again and again!

As seen in “Cloth Paper Scissors” magazine [March 2009 issue) Jane’s Recycled Circles is a layered project that will teach you an assortment of mixed media techniques, while creating this guided, yet totally your own one of a kind artwork. (And there’s no drawing -- Just cutting out squares and circles!) Each student’s work will look very very different, even though we’re all doing the same step by step process. The class is especially great for beginners, as you just can’t go wrong! We’ll be working on paper, but using some paper and some cloth for collage, then hand sewing and beading to give the piece additional interest and texture. Register now.

Sketching & Watercolor, Journal Style

San Diego Watercolor Society
San Diego, California

Be inspired to record your life, a special trip, or your daily adventures in a loose, quick journal style format. We’ll start inside with some basic lessons, and then move out into the lovely Liberty Station Promenade to experience drawing and painting what you see outside. We’ll spend the most of the days exploring our surroundings, and sketching, watercoloring and journaling what we see. Jane, known for her friendly, encouraging teaching style, will demonstrate drawing on location, and watercolors using a straight-forward, intuitive approach. You’ll choose simple objects, vignettes or vistas to draw and paint, and then journaling your thoughts impressions on 5x7” pages. Everyone has their own drawing style, just like handwriting, and Jane will help you to see and then record what you see on paper. Near the end of the Sunday, we’ll go back to the workshop and finish our journal pages with clever text and border techniques to ‘make it a page.’ Jane will show you some options to make your watercolor pages into a simple book or portfolio. The class is geared for beginners, but all levels are welcome. Register now, online.
