Museum exhibit is big deal for group
By: JEFF FRANK - Staff Writer

It took awhile, but the artists of 10 North have their first exhibition at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, and they are pretty happy about it.

The group of 10 women artists was formed in 1993, but until today, when its show opens, along with three other exhibits, the North County group has not had a show at the center or other museum.

"We're thrilled. We really are. It's a big deal for the center to invite local artists," said Jane LaFazio, a founding member. "To be one of the first (local) groups is really great."

A painting by Jeannie Moore led to the invitation. The arts center's museum director, Mary-Catherine Ferguson, bought one of Moore's paintings at the Escondido Arts Partnership's Municipal Gallery. When Ferguson asked if she had others like it and discussed a display, Moore mentioned 10 North.

Through the years, many in the local arts community have been disenchanted because of museum officials' lack of interest in exhibiting their work.

Ferguson plans a different approach.

"I think it's wonderful (to have 10 North participating)," she said. "I think it allows us to connect back to some of those people who have felt disconnected from the museum. I'm thrilled at the possibility that exists now to bring in more community exhibits."

The 10 North show features all original, never-before-seen art, mostly watercolors.

"I think this is some of our best work. This is a huge exposure for us," said LaFazio.
