Italian Gallery

My husband and I went on an artist’s tour of Tuscany 1998 and this gallery contains work done in the late 90s. Oh my gosh, we had such a wonderful time.

The greens hills, the red poppies, the red Chianti, the golden raviolis, the elaborate churches, the shapes, colors, sounds and smells of Tuscany. What a wondrous place. The trip helped me to recognize, appreciate and share my artistic talent. Medieval Italy cherished its artists.

I chose the subject because it was so quintessential European-so simple and so humbly beautiful. Twentieth century laundry hanging against an ancient stone wall. The pencil drawing for this was done “plein air” (on location) in Volpaia, Italy, and I completed the painting at home, [while listening to a Andre Botticella cd].

Signed, limited edition giclee prints are available $60

This painting combines the two most memorable images I have of Tuscany, the green rolling hills and the elaborate altarpieces I saw in the cathedrals. To me, it’s like looking through a medieval church window, out on to the lush, spring landscape.

The fabulous Tuscan countryside in the spring. I painted this sitting in the grass outside a huge Renaissance Cathedral, in Tuscany. I still remember hearing the buzz of bees and the nearby workers speaking in hushed Italian, and feel the soft stirring of the breeze.

When I look at this painting, I can still feel the warm breeze, hear the bees buzzing, smell and taste the ripe cherries in my mouth, reminding me of the hours I spent painting this on location in Tuscany.

Pienza is one of the many charming medieval towns in Tuscany. This fruit stand was tucked in between two ancient buildings on a cobblestone street in lovely Pienza.

"View of Tuscany"

Pots of red geraniums are all over Tuscany, and as soon as we returned home to San Diego, I planted red geraniums in terra-cotta pots, so I’d be reminded of our trip. Chianti and ripening tomatoes on a window sill, frame yet another view of the glorious Tuscan countryside. Created for the permanent collection of Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, California.
